Nasa is launching a telescope that will search for “others” on earth-like planets in a slice of the Milky Way. If we found intelligent sentient beings on another planet, would the Church feel the need to carry the message of Jesus to the “Martians”? How would this affect the Church’s self-understanding of being a “unique” possession of G-d’s in all of creation? Would we feel the need to go and “evangelize” the “Martians”? Would we colonize the new planets the way the Anglos colonized North America, effectively eliminating purity* in other cultures and civilizations?

*Purity in the sense of not being assimilated into a more dominant culture.
